Halloween Meeting

Hi Ladies!

Thanks for everyone's participation in the Potluck Halloween Meeting!  It was such a pleasure to have every member in attendence and in the Halloween spirit :).  Thank you Kacey and Amy for forwarding pictures from the meeting.  If anyone else had their camera send your pictures to me too (I think Heather and Sal also had their cameras- send me your pictures ASAP).  I'm attempting to make a slideshow here on the blog with all the Halloween pictures and would like to include all pictures.  Thanks!

I've made a few updates to the blog.  Please notice that I've made a list of the books we've read in 2008 along the right-hand side of the page.  These are the eligible books of inspiration for the Bluestocking's gift exchange.  There is a maximum $20 spending limit.  Siri has offered to have the gift exchange during her meeting which will be Wednesday December 3rd.  So bring your wrapped gift but don't bother labeling it for someone specific because there will be stealing of gifts!  I can't wait to see what creative gifts you all come up with this year.  Last year's gift exchange was awesome, so I hope everyone can make it!

As suggested last meeting, I'll be including requested recipes from our meetings on this blog.  At the meetings, if there are any specific recipes you'd like, make sure to tell me so that I can post the recipe or a link to the recipe for all to see!

Here's a link for Siri's delicious Salmon Tartare
Her only adjustments to the recipe is that she used siracha in the aioli and used wheat thins instead of the bread.

There was also a request for the Mediterranean Couscous dish I made.  I substituted low sodium chicken broth and used whole wheat couscous.  Very quick and easy!

Any posting with recipes, I will label as "recipe" so if you search by that label, any posts with recipe info should be presented to you.
If anyone has requests for recipes from previous meetings let me know!

November's meeting will actually be held by Siri on Wednesday December 3rd.  We will be discussing Tortilla Flat by John Steinbeck.  See you then!

Happy Reading,
Jessica

Heather, did I miss anything or do we need anything else?

I can't wait to see everyone's costumes :)  I'm making mine out of a trash bag so no excuses!  Bring your cameras!

The Highest Tide

Hosted by: Tyree
In Attendence:  Jessica, Siri, Heather, Jeanine, Amy, Sal

Hope you are feeling better Kacey!  We missed you Gina!

The Highest Tide was a nice easy read, made me want to hang out the tidepools like Tyree and I did as kids!  Poking our fingers in sea anemones so that their tentacles stuck to our fingers, spotting tiny little fish trapped in the pools left behind on the rocks during low tide and the amazing efforts we witnessed when a baby gray whale had lost its mother and the people trying to get it back out to sea.  This all happened in at the tidepools in La Jolla!  How amazing it would have been to make the discoveries that Miles made in literally his own backyard.  Well it's our backyard too!  Makes me realize how much I take it for granted.

Anyways, for the month of October we will not be reading such sweet kid-friendly fare.  Rather we'll be reading an author who inspires Stephen King!  Be prepared for the living dead!!!!  WHA HA HA HA.... (cue creepy laughter).  If you didn't make it for last year's October meeting, make sure you make it to this year's!  We had a great time getting dressed up in costumes and heading out for a night on the town.  Who cares if our meeting doesn't actually fall on Halloween.  That makes it all the more fun!  We'll be doing potluck at Heather's place then heading to the Lamplighter for drinks and karaoke, if you dare!!!!  I'll be sending out a messge as the time approaches to figure out what we will be bringing to the potluck.

Happy Reading!

Still Life With Woodpecker by Tom Robbins

Hosted by: Jessica
In Attendence: Tyree, Siri, Sal, Heather, Kacey, Gina, Amy

Welcome Amy to your first Bluestockings meeting!

I am so pleased that this book was so well received!  I really enjoyed reading this, my first Tom Robbins book and know that I will be reading more of his books.  Sal, you'll have to tell us what you think of Skinny Legs and All when you read it.  This was such an irreverent wacky read and I was worried that you all wouldn't find it enjoyable, so I was so happy to hear you all loved it as much as I did!

Tyree will be hosting this month's book, "The Highest Tide" by Jim Lynch on September 24th.  We will be making plans for our October Halloween meeting, so bring some ideas!  See you then!

"I'm pretty sure there's a theme, I just don't know what it is"

The Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino
Hosted by: Gina
In Attendence: Tyree, Siri, Heather, Jeanine, Sal, Jessica

Welcome back, Sal! We've missed you!
Place your vote for Sal's book below!

Thanks for another fantastic meeting, Ladies.

Themes we discussed:
Enlightenment via self-exile
Living his life in the trees, actually forced the Baron to create bonds with a variety of townspeople that he wouldn't have had interactions with had he lived in the house of the Baron. Perhaps this made him a better Baron.
Strong female characters
Viola's a bitch, but Sal likes her anyways
Pirates, sex in the trees, a well read thief, what more do ya need!

Welcome to the Bluestocking's BLOG!

Hello Ladies!

I thought this might be a fun way for us to communicate, organize and document the bookclub.  Here you will find the bookclub schedule, meeting dates, pictures and other information.  To begin with, I've set up a voting section for Sal's book.  Place your vote (Sal excluded) and we'll have a winner as soon as everyone has voted!  I'm totally new to this so if anyone has any experience and/or suggestions please help me out!
